For
more than twenty years Fattig Fish has offered a cold-tolerant strain
of mosquito fish (Gambusia affinis) which are particularly well-suited
for use north of the 39th parallel. Unlike more commonly available strains,
this hardy strain has been developed to successfully overwinter at air
temperatures to -30 F. and to withstand summer air temperatures to 100
F. Southern races of mosquito fish will NOT overwinter in northern climates
and will NOT actively feed in cold weather even though mosquitos hatch
readily.
In
areas where midges are a problem, mosquito fish are equally efficient
in controlling midge numbers.
Mosquito fish are small guppy-like fish
used to control mosquito populations by devouring mosquito or midge larvae.
According to U.S. Navy research, a pair of half-grown Gambusia can consume
5000 mosquito larvae in 11 weeks. An adult female can devour several hundred
larvae per day. These voracious predators have upturned mouths specially
designed for scooping up larvae prey, and represent one of the most environmentally
friendly forms of mosquito control.
Gambusia are highly prolific: each female
will produce three to four broods of 40 to 100 young each year. Gambusia
typically live two to three years, so produce a multitude of offspring
during their lifespan. Unlike most other fish, gambusia bear live young;
these offspring begin consuming larvae shortly after birth.
Gambusia are ideally suited to stock ponds,
ornamental ponds, golf courses, canals, creeks and lakes. They prefer
to inhabit the shallow vegetated areas near the shore which are also the
preferred habitat of mosquito larvae. They require virtually no maintenance,
as they are self-feeding and self-sustaining. Their adaptability and effectiveness
in mosquito control have made mosquito fish one of the most distributed
freshwater fish in the world.
Gambusia may be stocked either in spring
or fall. Fall release enables the gambusia to begin controlling mosquito
populations in advance of the spring breeding season, while spring release
is particularly appropriate for shallow bodies of water such as ditches
which may dry up by the end of summer.

Longfin Koi at Fattig Fish
While we admire quality koi in any of
the varieties, we have chosen to focus our breeding efforts on what
we personally consider the most beautiful. Our goal is to breed multi-colored
metallic butterfly koi of the finest quality. Multi-colored metallic
koi are generally classified in the Hikarimoyo-mono group. While good
metallic koi with their beatiful luster can be truly stunning, the added
adornment of broad flowing fins gives these koi a dramatic, graceful
presence.
We breed just five varieties of butterfly
koi. These are Kikusui, Heisei Nishiki, Kujaku, Hariwake, and Beni Kikokuryu.
Kikusui are the metallic counterpart of a doitsu (or scaleless) Kohaku.
Heisei are likewise a metallic
doitsu Taisho Sanke. Kujaku, or peacock, are a platinum base with gold,
orange or red pattern overlaid with a dark pine-cone pattern. Hariwake
are two colored metallic koi which we breed primarily in lemon and platinum,
known as Yamabuki Hariwake. Beni Kikokuryu are developed from Kumonryu,
and are somewhat changeable, but beautiful at any time. The base is
more like pewter than platinum, with black and red pattern.
Our koi are robust individuals with good
body shape. The colors are thick and the metallic luster is outstanding.
Our fish are healthy and are from disease free stock. Genetics account
for many of the attributes of these beautiful fish, and they are also
grown on a top quality diet. In many years of feeding fish, this is
the best feed we have used. Contact us for inquiries on this terrific
diet.
Given the health problems facing much
of the koi industry today, we must remember that no koi can maintain
immunity and proper disease resistance without solid basic nutrition.
We select the parents of your
koi based on our strict standards:
1. Healthy, robust individual that exude
vitality.
2. Extremely good metallic luster.
3. Deep, vibrant colors.
4. Correct body shape and physical conformation.
5. Outstanding fin size and shape,
whether in butterfly or standard.
Specific pattern or exact distribution
of color on the koi is not inheritable, and consequently top quality
breeders are not necessarily the best patterned fish, but they must
be the best in all other aspects.
We take great pride in producing healthy
fish of the highest quality in the varieties we work with.
