Butterfly Koi

Butterfly, and longfin koi are a relatively new development. There are many theories as to the origin of these varieties and it is quite plausible that there were multiple origins. The only distinguishable characteristics other than fin size are slightly lengthened barbels and larger nares.

Many of the longfin koi produced, especially in the U.S., have very poor, unattractive finnage. These narrow, stringy fins are the result of poor breeder selection. We breed for what many refer to as butterfly fins. These individuals have wide fins as well as good length. The overall impression is of graceful strength.

We have chosen to focus our breeding efforts on butterfly koi of the hikarimoyo-mono group. The long, wide flowing fins impart a grace and serenity unmatched in any other form. The multicolored patterns and metallic sheen of the Hikarimoyo-mono group combine with the finnage to produce a stunning image at any size.
